The Book of John

May 4, 2017

Students will write a research paper employing skills and resources that are fundamental to good scripture exegesis. Students will choose one of the New Testament books and write a 6-8 page research paper including the following: (a) identity of the author, (b) the time of the document’s writing (dating), (c) the circumstances that the epistle addresses (historical occasion), and (d) the distinctive contribution of the epistle to the theology of the New Testament (theological themes). A title page and works cited page are required, but do not count towards the 6-8 pages. Number your pages. Use centered bold title headings throughout the paper to indicate the above sections (Author, Dating, etc.). Students will use at least the following resources in researching this assignment:

Brown, Raymond E. An Introduction to the New Testament. New York: Doubleday, 1997.

Guthrie, Donald. New Testament Introduction. Fourth edition. Downers Grove, IL: InterVarsity Press, 1990.

Freedman, David Noel, ed. The Anchor Bible Dictionary. 6 vols. New York: Doubleday.

Martin, Ralph P. and Peter Davids, eds. The InterVarsity Dictionary of the Later New Testament and its Developments. Downers Grove, IL: InterVarsity Press, 1997.

The Harper Collins Study Bible.

The format of the paper should conform to the MLA style manual. The paper is to be typed and double-spaced. Use 1” margins, 12 point Times New Roman font. Include a Bibliography or Works Cited page. Your final paper is due on May 4. Both a hard copy and eCompanion submission is due by the beginning of class that day. Papers may be turned in up to April 25 for a provisional review and grade to provide the opportunity to make necessary changes to improve his or her grade.
