In accordance with CSUSM policy, each student will be required to submit a writing assignment.
Each student is to submit at least a 2,500 word written paper, discussing documentary
presentations concerning companies and economies and the role of accounting. The documentary
presentations will be available via Internet link, to allow review of the documentary presentations
in the completion of the writing assignment.

No. 1 Documentary – Company and Writing Objective: John Deere – Manufacturing Costs
John Deere has a sophisticated factory for building grain harvesters. Focus on the factory
operations. Write a memo to the management of John Deere concerning the types of costs to be
considered in determining the costs that go into production of a John Deere harvester combine.
John Deere will be using this information to determine the price to be charged to customers for
the harvester combine. John Deere needs to capture, as accurately as possible, all of the costs
incurred in producing the harvester combine. Be specific, using items from the video that
describe the raw materials, direct labor and overhead item components of the manufactured
product. In addition, describe the accounting information concerning the flow of the costs from
Raw Materials, Labor and Overhead to Work in Process, then to Finished Goods, and finally to
Cost of Goods Sold. If possible, please include sample journal entries to present the accounting
flow of information.

No. 2 Documentary – Company and Writing Objective: Freightliner – Job Order Costing
Freightliner is a company that makes, among other things, the chassis (frame) for a Winnebago
Vectra. Write a memo to the management of Freightliner concerning accounting for the costs
associated with producing the frames for Winnebago under a Job Order Costing system.
Specifically discuss the costs that go into the job, using the information in the textbook
concerning Job Order Costing. Apply that process to the facts in the documentary to advise
Freightliner on how to accurately capture the costs associated with the Winnebago job. If
possible, please include sample journal entries to present the accounting flow of information.

No. 3 Documentary – Company and Writing Objective: Budweiser – Process Cost Accounting
Budweiser manufactures beer. Write a memo to the management of Budweiser concerning
accounting for the costs associated with producing beer under a Process Costing system.
Describe the method to be used to account for the process of brewing beer under a Process Cost
System, in order to accurately determine their product cost, using the information in the textbook
concerning Process Costing. Apply that process to the facts from the documentary. Be specific
about accounting for Raw Materials, Labor and Overhead. Describing the process by which costs
will flow through the accounts in order to capture all costs associated with their production. If
possible, please include sample journal entries to present the accounting flow of information.
The heading of each of the memos to each company should be as follows:

Each memo should be typed. Each should be approximately two pages long, using single spacing
and Times New Roman, 12 Point font. The header of each page, after the first page, should
contain the name of the client, the name of the writer, the date, and the page number. The writing
style should be in paragraph form (no bullet points). Use headings to break up the paper and
direct the attention of the reader. Frequent use of headings may add clarity to the memo. Be
Clear, Concise and Comprehensive. Each student should comment on the areas addressed by the
documentary presentations, both based on the documentary presentations and the experiences of
the student.
All three memos are to be submitted as a single PDF file attached to a single email. The file name
for all three memos should be in the following style:
LastnameFirstname_Acct202_Sec30_Spring2017_WritingRequirement_mmddyy
The subject Line of the email should be:
Acct 202, Sec 30, Spring 2017 – Lastname, Firstname: Writing Requirement
The paper is to be submitted so that it is recorded as received prior to the beginning time of the
class period, on the day assigned.
