The aim of this book is vocalising the concerns of the authors regarding globalisation and its effects on food and public health. The book was conceived at a time when there was great debate over obesity and associated healthcare costs. At the end of the 20th century, there was a contentious reaction of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) strategy for tackling the diet related epidemic that was overtaking the world at the time CITATION Lan04 l 2057 (Lang & Heasman, 2004). The authors noted this lack and marginalisation that was given to food, food safety, food quality and public health.
The authors believe that food has a wider impact as the western diet is spread through globalisation to the developing world CITATION Lan04 l 2057 (Lang & Heasman, 2004). This book introduces the reader to the contemporary politics of food today and the background of how companies in the food industry compete to meet the demand of the consumer. The book sets out a world that is sustainable. This however contradicts the society of the day. The social and economic conditions in the world are unequal and unfair; providing the need for concrete food and public health policy. This book was then published during the same year as a report by the WHO that sought to tackle diet related disease was also published CITATION WHO04 l 2057 (WHO, 2004). The WHO report set out to examine the science behind the relationship between one’s physical activity patterns and their diet and the major nutrition related chronic diseases CITATION WHO04 l 2057 (WHO, 2004)
