Estrogen is a hormone produced by follicles of the ovaries. At the middle of the menstrual cycle Estrogen production increases due to growth of one large follicle on one of the ovaries. As concentrations of estrogen increase, they begin to stimulate secretion of luteinizing hormone by the anterior pituitary gland. Luteinizing hormone, in turn, stimulates follicle growth and more estrogen release. With each increase in LH there is a corresponding increase in follicle size. With each increase in follicle size there is a corresponding increase in estrogen release. At some point the follicle reaches a size that causes it to rupture and release an egg.
